St. Francesco church (Byzantine Museum)

virtual tour preview-map

St. Francesco was the main temple the Francesca Order Monastery. The architecture of the building and its ornaments are very interesting.
It belongs to the single aisle Basilica type with wooden roof and a transverse aisle, and two side chapels. A crossed vault covers its Northeast side while its southeast side is decorated with capitals and arcs worked in marble.
Its Corinthian style doorframe is impressive.
During the Turkish occupation the temple was turned into an "Imaret" (a shelter for the poor). It was also used as a cultural center until 1996.
It was recently renovated to accommodate the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of the Prefecture of Rethymno.
