The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is housed in
a restored 17th century Venetian mansion on the street "Vernados".
It is an
institution of public benefit, founded in 1973 by the President of the
Historical and Folklore Institution, Christoforos Stavroulakis, and Fali
Vogiatzaki. The museum aims to collect as much Cretan folklore and historical
material as possible, especially from the region of Rethymno, in order to
preserve and transmit Cretan traditions to future generations.
The folklore
section is hosted on the ground floor, where items of traditional handicraft
work and folklore art are presented, as well as traditional farming tools.
