The Holy Temple of Mary Magdalene (Lady of the Angels)

virtual tour preview-map

The Temple of the Lady of the Angels (or "Little Mary") was built during the Venetian period and was dedicated to Mary Magdalene of the Dominican order. It is a small duplicate of the "Grand Mary", the Metropolitan temple of Rethymno.

It is a three-aisle church that was turned into a Mosque with a minaret during the Turkish period. However, soon after its construction, the minaret fell apart. In 1917, the church was reconstructed and became an Orthodox church, According to tradition, the Christians ‘directed' the discovery of an icon representing Virgin Mary at the stairway of the minaret, to put pressure on the Turks to surrender the temple.
