The Central Gate of the Fortezza Fortress

virtual tour preview-map

The Central Gate is located on the east side of the fortress, between the bastions of St. Paul and St. Nicolas. The east side was the safest choice for building the central gate, and was directly connected to the city. The two bastions of St. Paul on the south and St. Nicolas on the north covered the central gate. According to Venetian documents, east from the gate there was a little church of Santa Maria or Madonna (Virgin Mary the Paleokastrini). On the same location, the Turks built the pentagonic fortification in 1646 to complete the defense of the central gate.

The gate consists of a long arcade, passing through the walls, (16, 80 m. long and 3, 80 m. wide), high enough to allow the easy access of the soldiers, wagons and cannon-guns.

On the north side of the arcade, there are three spaces (watch towers) built in the walls' backfilling. Its doorframe is arced, built by oblong stones with bases and capitals. Over the arc, an edge is formed bearing the Venetian emblem (the lion of St. Marcos).
